For the AAA Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, volunteers will have a variety of tasks to help improve the ReStore’s operations and support Habitat for Humanity's mission of providing affordable housing. Here’s a breakdown of what volunteers can expect to do:
1. Sorting and Organizing Donations
Volunteers will assist with sorting through incoming donations, ensuring that items are clean, in good condition, and properly organized. This might include:
- Sorting furniture, appliances, and building materials.
- Categorizing and pricing small household items and décor.
- Testing donated electronics or tools to make sure they’re functional.
2. Cleaning and Preparing Items for Sale
Volunteers will help clean and maintain items that are on the sales floor. This could involve:
- Dusting and wiping down furniture, appliances, or other donated goods.
- Arranging items on the sales floor in an aesthetically appealing way to attract customers.
- Repainting or making minor repairs to items that are slightly damaged to make them sellable.
3. General Store Maintenance
Volunteers may assist in maintaining the store space by:
- Sweeping, mopping, and tidying up the store.
- Organizing storage areas or backrooms.
- Reorganizing shelves and displays to maximize space and make items easier to find.
4. Special Projects and Repairs
For volunteers with a knack for handiwork or a bit of DIY spirit, there may be small repair or refurbishing projects, such as:
- Fixing minor repairs to furniture or household items.
- Assembling donated furniture.
- Helping with any special refurbishing projects that the ReStore may be running for specific products.
By volunteering at the ReStore, participants will directly support Habitat for Humanity's efforts to provide affordable housing to families in need, and contribute to a more sustainable community by helping recycle and repurpose donated goods. All of these tasks are essential in keeping the ReStore running smoothly, so that it can continue funding Habitat for Humanity's home-building initiatives.

In Support of Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area
Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area is a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Habitat is an ecumenical housing ministry with the goal of eliminating poverty housing.Unwilling to accept the fact that thousands of families live without adequate shelter, Habitat challenges and invites individuals, religious organizations of all faiths, companies, foundations, and other organizations to join with us to improve the living conditions of people existing in inadequate housing. In order to do that, Habitat creates a joint venture in which those who benefit from the housing contribute their labor in the form of “sweat equity hours” to the successful completion of the home.
